IKEA asked the right questions

How the furniture giant’s frustration led to the invention of the ROS rack repair system

Global furniture giant IKEA were facing high annual costs for replacing damaged racking uprights at their Dutch distribution centre near Oosterhout. They asked Hans Slavenburg, an independent structural engineer, if an alternative to replacing the damaged uprights could be found. After more than two years of investigation and research, Hans developed a unique hydraulic repair process.

The ROS Rack Repair System was born.

After the successful repair of more than 5000 uprights for IKEA in Holland alone, ROS, with the permission of IKEA, patented and then offered the system to the market. Since 2005, the ROS Rack Repair System has been used throughout Europe and North America and is currently completing almost 150,000 repairs annually. ROS is now Europe’s largest racking repair organisation and one of the biggest in the world.

LIKE MOST CUSTOMERS, SOME OF IKEA’S QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS WERE:

Do we really have to replace all damaged uprights?

Surely most can be repaired?

Is there a way we can repair these uprights without removing all the pallets from the racks?

Can we find a solution which is far less intrusive than traditional racking repair methods?

Can we find a way of drastically reducing our annual spend on racking repairs, whilst complying with our health and safety obligations?

EN 15635: the standard for the structural safety of storage systems

This European Standard gives guidelines for operational aspects relevant to structural safety of storage systems. It minimises the risk and consequences of unsafe operation or damage to the structure.

To meet the extremely high requirements of this standard, the ROS Rack Repair System was comprehensively tested and analysed by three of the world’s biggest and most trusted inspection, verification, and testing organisations: SGS, Bureau Veritas, and DEKRA. All three confirmed that damaged rack uprights repaired using the ROS Rack Repair System were as strong as they had been before the repair, and that damage to the same area could safely be repaired twice.

No other rack repair system has been so thoroughly tested and analysed. No other rack repair system conforms to EN 15635. The ROS Rack Repair System is a world beating, patented system.
